Changing The Way You Think

Is it enough to just quit drinking and drugging? If all i have to do is just not drink and use
then what am i going to do for fun? Every fun thing I can remember revolved around drinking an using.

When I first got to treatment back in 1999, i can distinctly remember thinking to myself “What am I going to do for fun”.
I kind of felt like my life was over. I knew I couldn’t go on drinking and using. I was having real
doubts about weather or not I would be able to quit.

When my sponsor took me through the steps, it was explained to me that drugs and alcohol are only
a symptom of my disease. that the real problem lies squarely between my ears in that thing we
like to call our brain. It turns out that addicts and alcoholics aren’t wired like other people.

So, what I needed to do was to change my thinking. This is the whole purpose behind the steps.
Once i changed the way i thought, a whole new world opened up to me. I began to see things in ways
i was never able to comprehend previously. This is called a spiritual awakening.

Once i began to walk down this new path, i noticed that i could become useful to other people.
when i made efforts toward that goal something amazing happened. I was having fun! I had many new
friends and they liked me for me, not for what i had or could do for them. I have truly found all
that I was looking for in life and much much more. If I can do it then so can you.
